Located in Menifee County and surrounded by the Red River Gorge Geological Area, the Daniel Boone National Forest, the Sheltowee Trail and Cave Run Lake are 161 acres of wild and wooly wonderland. The land is surrounded by majestic cliffs and rock faces. The property is home to the Hog Creek Shelter, one of the several well known rock houses in Menifee County. In the past the area has been a site of a significant archeological dig for Indian artifacts by the University of Kentucky and Morehead State University. The Hog Branch, a tributary of the Beaver Creek flows through the middle of the land.
Kendrick Ridge supports a strong wildlife habitat. Here you will find deer, turkey, bobcat, squirrel and other small game. Deep pockets throughout the wooded countryside provide innumerable hiding spots for game, and the Hogg Branch is a further attraction. Other wildlife may include coyote, fox and many nongame species of birds. This property is located within 10 miles of Lowbow Marina on Cave Run Lake, one of the top 10 Muskie Lakes in North America.
The Hog Creek Shelter is located at the head of Hog Creek. It is a fine, large semicircular shelter about 100 feet long, thirty feet deep and twenty feet high located high up on the side of a cliff. The shelter was used as an aboriginal habitation. The inhabitants of the region vouch for the fact that it has yielded numerous artifacts and fragments of shell and bone have been found on the surface. Moreover, superficial digging disclosed the remains of at least one burial. The floor of the shelter is thickly covered with large fallen rocks but between the rocks the deposit of sand, ashes and charcoal extends in some places to a depth of two or three feet. Most of the surface has been disturbed by some digging which we were assured was for the purpose of discovering “buried treasure” which, according to legends is to be found in many of these caves. At any rate, the site has now been rendered useless for archaeological work and only a few exploratory holes were du. The walls of the shelter are much blackened by smoke but it is likely that this discoloration is due to recent rather than ancient fires.
